  • History
More than 160 years of faith, learning, and tradition.
    • Overview

Since 1866, St. Teresa High School has prepared young men and women to lead lives of faith, service, and excellence. What began as a small Catholic school has grown into a vibrant college preparatory community where students continue to build on a tradition rooted in academic achievement, Catholic values, and lifelong relationships.

While much has changed over the decades, the mission has remained the same: forming students who are prepared to succeed in college, careers, and life while living out the Gospel.

    • Our Story

St. Teresa's roots trace back to 1866, when the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary established a Catholic academy in Decatur. As the community grew, the school expanded and relocated to meet the needs of local families.

In 1913, the school moved to its current campus on North Water Street. Leadership later transitioned to the Ursuline Sisters, whose dedication helped strengthen the school's academic and spiritual foundation for generations of students.

St. Teresa became a coeducational high school in 1930, welcoming both young men and women into a community centered on faith, scholarship, and service. Continued growth led to the addition of new classrooms and facilities throughout the twentieth century, supporting an expanding curriculum and student life program.

Today, St. Teresa remains an independent Catholic high school serving students from throughout Central Illinois. Its graduates continue to make an impact in their communities, professions, parishes, and families across the country.
    • A Tradition That Continues

Every generation of Bulldogs has contributed to the story of St. Teresa.

Students continue traditions that have connected alumni for decades, from academic excellence and athletic competition to faith formation, service projects, fine arts, and school spirit. These shared experiences create lasting friendships and a strong sense of belonging that extends well beyond graduation.

Our history is not simply something we celebrate. It is something our students continue to write every day.
